Two weeks left to enter the Shaping Water Competition

There are just two weeks left to enter our Shaping Water Competition, which seeks ideas for an installation at Clerkenwell Design Week that celebrates the essence of water. Enter now before the contest closes for entries on 2 April.

The Shaping Water Competition is a design competition organised by Dezeen in collaboration with Villeroy & Boch and Ideal Standard.

It tasks entrants with creating a large-scale installation for St John’s Gate, a prominent historic location in the heart of Clerkenwell, London, during this year’s Clerkenwell Design Week festival.

Designs must represent water.

This can be explored as a functional water feature with still or flowing water, or through a more abstract interpretation, such as digital elements or the use of innovative alternative materials.

The contest is open to architects and designers worldwide aged 18 and over.

As the winning entrant will be responsible for realising the installation on-site, they must be available in London from 17 to 23 May to oversee its construction and deconstruction.

The winning entrant will receive a £5,000 prize and a £15,000 budget to realise their design, which will be exhibited during Clerkenwell Design Week from 20 to 22 May 2025.

Proposals must be designed for easy disassembly and reassembly so that they can be reused in other locations after Clerkenwell Design Week.

Entrants should consider the environmental impact of their designs and take steps to minimise any negative effects.

Information about the site, including measurements, can be downloaded here, while photographs of the site can be downloaded here.

Competition closes for entries on 2 April

Entries must be submitted by 2 April 2025. The winner will be notified by mid-April and will have one month to finalise the installation.

The allocated £15,000 budget must cover all costs, including fabrication, installation, maintenance, deconstruction, shipping and any travel and accommodation expenses required for the project.

Shortlisted and winning entrants may also be required to submit additional material to secure necessary approvals from Clerkenwell Design Week, the local council and other stakeholders.

How to enter

Entrants must submit a description of their proposal explaining how it meets the brief, along with supporting visuals, using the competition entry form.

Videos or animations may also be included and should be uploaded to an external hosting platform such as YouTube or Vimeo via a URL.
