Roche Bobois + Jiang Qiong Er’s Bamboo Mood Is a Whole Vibe

Bamboo Mood is more than just a collection; it is, quite frankly, a whole mood. In Roche Bobois’ latest collaboration with Jiang Qiong Er, the humble bamboo – a symbol and material synonymous with East Asian design – takes center stage. This iconic plant, revered for its strength and poetic symbolism, inspired the Chinese designer to create a collection that seamlessly blends modernity with cultural heritage. Marking Roche Bobois’ first full collection collaboration with an Asian designer, Bamboo Mood exudes tranquility and sophistication, offering an immersive experience into East Asian modern design.

Modern living room with large windows overlooking a pond. Features a red sofa, green armchairs, and various coffee tables, all on a light floor under a wooden ceiling

Bamboo Mood features a range of pieces, including a sofa, screen, console, cocktail tables, rugs, and lighting with additional ceramics and decorative accessories rounding out the collection. Bamboo itself is a powerful symbol in East Asian cultures, representing strength, resilience, and good fortune. With this rich symbolism at its core, Bamboo Mood is poised to withstand the test of time, transcending time and culture to integrate into contemporary interiors.

Bamboo has always fascinated me. Elegant, resilient, fluid, and peaceful, it counters strong winds with insolence and play. Bamboo bends but does not break. It whispers, trembles, filters the light, and plays with shadow. Timeless. It may seem fragile, yet it provides scaffolding for the world’s tallest skyscrapers. I designed this new bamboo-inspired collection as an invitation to travel; an inexhaustible source of inspiration, poetry, and dreams.

Generous sofas and glossy cocktail tables take on the form of bamboo stems, emphasizing the plant’s distinctive nodes in their designs. Handcrafted wool rugs, tufted with varying heights, offer an artistic interoperation of bamboo canes, adding a layer of texture and depth.
