Jonathan Anderson and Luca Guadagnino have built a close rapport in recent years with the two collaborating on films and costume design, including this summer’s “Challengers.” And now, that relationship is extending to capsule collections.
Following the success of the ‘I told ya’ T-shirts from “Challengers,” starring Zendaya and Josh O’Connor, comes a collection for “Queer,” another project the director and designer have worked on.
The film stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and is based on William S. Burroughs’ semiautobiographical novella “Queer.”
The collection includes caps, a canvas tote, hoodies, sweaters and T-shirts ranging from 100 to 225 pounds.
In the collection, Anderson has used imagery from the film such as a shot of seven guns; a film camera with an ashtray and magazine, and a still of Craig and Starkey on a beach.
Anderson also worked in a line from the script that was written by Justin Kuritzkes. “I want to talk to you…without speaking,” which is printed on the hoodies.
This is the second time that Anderson and Kuritzkes have worked together — their first project being “Challengers.”
“I was really struck by Jonathan’s work on both films. He comes from the fashion world and runs [two] incredible brands. You could think that a fashion designer coming into film would just be trying to put everybody in fabulous outfits, but he really had no ego whatsoever,” Kuritzkes said in an interview.
“For him it was really just about what is absolutely right for the characters. The fact that he was able to understand the job of a costume designer on a film with seemingly no introduction to it is just amazing and a testament to his intelligence,” he added.
Since Anderson’s collaboration with Guadagnino, the actors in the films have become posterboys for the designer on both brands he works on: JW Anderson and Loewe. Craig stars in Loewe’s fall 2024 collection campaign shot by David Simons.
