Jennifer Lawrence is the latest to wear a Dior recreation at Cannes Film Festival. The brand ambassador was styled by Jamie Mizrahi on Saturday for the premiere of her new film “Die, My Love,” where she stars opposite Robert Pattinson, who is also a face of Dior. She arrived on the red carpet with her hair pulled back in a bun, a red lip, and a pleated design that hails back to the namesake designer’s time.
Lawrence’s dress is a modern day version that was first seen in 1949. It is named for the composer Francis Poulenc. The strapless dress is pleated, featuring scalloped layers in tiers. The design is belted, pulling the waist tight.

The original creation was made of silk taffeta. When it was shown, the program said: “We have given the names of musicians to these dresses, which we wanted to be as ethereal as music.”
In 2018, Dior’s artistic director of women’s collections Maria Grazia Chiuri unveiled a couture capsule collection in Shanghai inspired by fans. “I found this fan in the archive that Christian Dior did for his first show,” she said at the time. “He also used the fan to put on top of the Miss Dior perfume because he wanted people not only to see the collection but to smell the idea of the Dior house. This capsule translates parts of the Dior archive into the pleats, like the fan. We work with the pleats of Mr. Dior, like the Bar jacket, the skirt and also the evening dress.”
Also on the subject of history, Chiuri will unveil the brand’s cruise show in Rome on May 27 at Villa Albani Torlonia, an 18th-century complex that houses a vast collection of Greek and Roman antiquities.

Lawrence was tapped by the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton-owned house as a celebrity face and ambassador in 2012.
