FiiO is taking the technology of yesteryear and bringing it into the modern era. The Chinese audio gear company has announced the new FiiO DM13 portable CD player, alongside a refresh of the FiiO CP13 portable cassette player. Both have instantly classic designs and modern features, plus they’ll allow you dig out that CD and cassette collection that you’ve been storing in the garage, to enjoy once again.
A CD Player for the Modern Age
The new FiiO DM13 portable CD player is particularly interesting. The product builds on the concept of the Sony Discman but adds modern features that the Discman could never offer. Notably, the DM13 not only plays your CDs, but it also has a Bluetooth connection that supports high-resolution codecs, meaning that you can stream high-quality music to your favorite wireless headphones. Of course, for audiophiles who don’t want to deal with wireless connectivity, there’s still a 3.5mm headphone jack and a 4.4mm balanced headphone jack.
It’s not just a CD player with Bluetooth, though. The DM13 can also be used with a full home speaker system thanks to the analog, SPDIF, and USB audio connectivity. When the player is connected to a permanent power source, the rechargeable battery can be completely bypassed thanks to a desktop mode. This should help preserve the battery life, which sits at 8 hours. On top of playing traditional CDs, the player will also be able to play MP3, FLAC, WAV, AAC, and WMA audio files that are burned onto a CD-R.
The FiiO DM13 will eventually be available in a series of different colors; however at launch, it’s only available in silver. Eventually, red, blue, black, and titanium versions will join the lineup. The player comes at $179 and will be available starting in September. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as though there’s a transparent option like the one now available on the CP13 cassette player.
A Cassette Player With Retro Vibes
The FiiO CP13 portable cassette player was already available for purchase, offering features like USB-C charging, a 13-hour battery life, and more. However new for the CP13 is a refresh with an eye-catching new transparent design that will sit alongside the already super-fun color options. With the new design, you’ll be able to see the tape inside the cassette player as it plays.
Transparent tech, in general, has been making a bit of a comeback. Smartphone manufacturer Nothing has been leading the way with its transparent back smartphones and earbuds, and it’s nice to see other companies jumping on board the trend, given the fact that the concept gives tech a retro-modern vibe.
The new FiiO DM13 CD player will be available in September via fiio.com, while the transparent FiiO CP13 cassette player is available now through Amazon.
