Macy’s Is Closing 66 Stores in 2025 — Here’s the List

Macy’s Inc. on Thursday disclosed the locations of the 66 stores it will close this year, a list that includes the Macy’s department store in downtown Brooklyn.

In New York City, Macy’s is also shuttering its Staten Island furniture store, and the Macy’s Backstage off-price stores in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn; Fordham Place in the Bronx, and Queens Place in Queens.

The downsizing, which is part of the retailer’s Bold New Chapter strategy announced in February 2024, calls for closing approximately 150 underproductive stores while investing in its 350 “go-forward” Macy’s locations, all through fiscal 2026. Last month, Macy’s upped its store closing count this year to 66 from 55, as previously reported.

Among other Macy’s department store closings are the locations in Boynton Beach, Fla.; Philadelphia City Center, and Sunrise Mall in Massapequa, N.Y.

“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” said Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s Inc., in a statement Thursday.

Macy’s also reported that investments in 50 Macy’s go-forward stores have boosted sales for three consecutive quarters and raised customer satisfaction scores. Investments in go-forward stores have included additional staffing by the women’s fitting rooms, at checkout areas and in the women’s shoes and handbags areas and improved visual merchandising. The better-selling brands have also been beefed up while less productive brands have been edited out, making the stores cleaner.

Macy’s Bold New Chapter initiatives will be expanded to additional go-forward locations in 2025 beyond the First 50, and Macy’s private brand overhaul — involving adding new brands to fill voids, reworking existing ones and dropping underperforming labels — is near complete, with the home labels getting worked over next year.
