This Persian-Inspired Taarof Table Hides Secrets for Your Next Party

Coffee tables are the unsung heroes of living rooms, but let’s be honest: they rarely come without a host of accessories, like trays, coasters, or other decor that we often have to incorporate to make it more useful. What if, though, your coffee table didn’t need extra objects? What if it could meet your needs and be put to use as is? Your wish can be realized with the Taarof Table, created by self-taught multidisciplinary artist and designer Kouros Maghsoudi. While technically a cocktail table, it pulls double-duty, meeting all your coffee table needs and hiding a functional secret: discrete storage compartments cleverly tucked into its legs.

Part of Maghsoudi’s debut furniture collection, Mehmooni—which premiered at this year’s COLLECTIBLE Design Fair—the Taarof Table draws inspiration from Persian culture and traditions. The word Mehmooni translates to “gathering” or “party” in Farsi, setting the tone for a collection that’s as much about celebration as it is about form. “With its modular features and playful design, the Taarof Table takes the traditional Persian gathering and reinterprets it through a contemporary lens,” Maghsoudi shares. “It’s both a conversation piece and the ultimate party companion, designed to make hosting effortless.”

Crafted from FSC-certified plywood and MDF, the Taarof Table may sound rugged in theory, but in practice, it’s anything but. Its softly rounded curves, finished with a zero-VOC lacquer, give it a refined, sculptural look that’s perfect for both everyday use and hosting soirées. Taarof’s name comes from the socio-cultural Persian art of etiquette often shown through an endearing back-and-forth exchange of pleasantries and polite gestures – think of the back-and-forth of “No, you take it,” “No, I insist!” that happens over the dinner check. That same concept of generosity is built into the table itself, with hidden leg inserts that reveal useful party-ready accessories. Maghsoudi explains further: “Inspired by the Persian tradition of Mehmooni, the Taarof Table brings people together with purpose. Its modular design, complete with a fruit bowl, ice bucket, and ashtray, invites guests to indulge, just as they would at a true Persian gathering.”

Completely customizable in size, color, and finishes, the Taarof Table is designed to suit your space and elevate your next gathering. Its playful take on postmodern design brings the warmth and spirit of Persian hospitality straight to your living space and with a lead time of eight weeks, it’s made to order and ready to wow your guests at your next mehmooni.
