Jony Ive teams up with Moncler on "simple and joyful" outerwear collection

Designer Jony Ive’s brand LoveFrom has created its first-ever outerwear line for fashion brand Moncler, featuring a magnetic button that lets users create different clothing combinations.

The LoveFrom, Moncler collection aims to combine former Apple chief design officer Ive’s design skills with Moncler’s technical knowledge.

The collection was designed by Jony Ive

“Who I work with has become more important to me than what I work on,” Ive said. “Our collaboration has been wonderfully simple and joyful.”

“We have learnt so much from each other and I am particularly happy this modest collection marks the beginning of a longer-term collaboration.”

Designed to be adaptable and layered, the collection is centred around a simple jacket.

With the help of the Ive-designed magnetic Duo button, users can then add three different “shells” – a field jacket, parka or poncho – to customise the core jacket.

Made from aluminium, brass, steel and a high-grade heat-resistant magnet, the button connects the different layers of clothing and has the logos of both brands engraved on its metalwork.

“The two elements fit together with a satisfying ‘click’ – a sound Jony Ive became fixated with during the design process and that represents the attraction and partnership of LoveFrom and Moncler,” Moncler said.

The outerwear collection comes in a range of colours depending on the style – yellow for the core jacket, green for the field jacket, light blue for the parka and orange for the poncho.

The pieces, which are also available in off-white, were made from a new type of recycled nylon.

Created exclusively for the collection, the fabric was made by taslanising yarn-dyed fibres – a treatment that uses compressed air to texturise the fabric and give it a more natural look.

Moncler also used unusually large looms to create the textile, allowing each garment to be made from one piece of fabric that simply folds together.

The LoveFrom, Moncler collaboration also saw Ive and Moncler rework some of the brand’s detail designs, including the labels, branding, buttons, trims and pullers for the new collection.

It comes in packaging decorated with a graphic black and white design, which also includes small paper models of the garments that illustrate how they can be layered together.

“Working with Jony takes you out of the ordinary,” said Moncler CEO Remo Ruffini.

“This is not only due to the fact that he is a worldwide icon and a living legend of design,” he added. “Working with Jony is also an experience because you realise that love, friendship and respect are always at the centre and enable creativity and ideas.”

Since leaving Apple in 2019, Ive has worked on a wide variety of design projects. These include working with audio brand Linn to revive its 50-year-old Sondek LP12 turntable and designing King Charles III’s coronation emblem.

Together with then-Prince Charles, Ive also launched the Terra Carta design lab in 2021, which seeks solutions to tackle climate change.
