Expanding her foray into glass, this cheeky vessel collection from Jess Humphrey embodies a rich minimalist tradition in a slightly unconventional medium. Taking inspiration from the works of Ellsworth Kelly and Josef Albers, the hand-blown vessels are adorned with jewel-like orbs dotted across the surface.
Titled Get Your Rocks Off, Honey, this collection is an exploration in color and form. The artist shares, “There is a magical moment when everything just feels exactly right, like what it feels like when you tap in the fitting puzzle piece or when you get lost in a kiss or what it feels like when you’re sweaty dancing at a Primal Scream show… I’m so happy with how this collection came out.” After two decades in the fashion industry, Humphrey turned to art full time in 2019. She has explored many mediums within that time, including but not limited to collage, glass, photography, and fashion design.
The vessels are sprinkled with dots of all shapes and sizes, adding tactile feedback to the list of what we love about this collection. The colors are handled in a way that makes the spheres take on a specific brilliance and luminosity that is absent from the body of the vessel. Thus, these jewels are suspended in space, different views and colors emerging from every side of the object. Each is unique, as is the beauty of hand-blown glass. There are several tumblers, as well as bowls and vases available on Humphrey’s site.
Iridescent hues and pearlescent globes greet the viewer of this collection from every angle. These jewels of glass, popping up on the surface of the vessels, are at once distinct and cohesive as a collection. This pulls on our natural understanding of white space, and maintains the illusion of levitation.
All created in the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, the world-renowned glass studio has incredible capabilities in the industry for furnace working, flame working, kiln working, cold working, and more. The Corning Museum is home to the largest museum collection dedicated to glass in the world, and is the perfect incubator for anyone experimenting within the medium.
